The first generation nationalists in African nations were convinced that colonialism constituted the major obstacle to national development. Consequently, they siphoned their efforts into the war that burnt down colonial dictatorship in the continent. However, after decades of independence, African nation states are still classified as underdeveloped countries as they are battling with social, political and economic problems. Strategic Union of Professionals for the Advancement of Nigeria (SUPA) is a Non-Governmental Organization that provides a forum for Nigerian professionals to unite to join in the struggle for the advancement of the nation. In this interview with Mr. Eugene Onyibo, the Director of Skyheight Success Consult, an organization that is committed to promoting entrepreneurship in Nigeria; the philosopher turned business coach and motivational speaker bares his mind on the challenges of entrepreneurship in the nation.

SUPA: How significant is entrepreneurship to Nigerian economy?
Mr. Eugene: The high level of poverty and unemployment in Nigeria highlights the necessity of entrepreneurship in the nation. A recent research conducted by our Organization reveals that while Nigerian tertiary institutions produce about 250,000 graduates annually, about 30% of them secure employment within five (5) years of graduation. The research also shows that over 75% of the unfortunate 70% cannot be self-employed. We also discovered that there are far more businesses that failed than ever succeeded. Our finding also shows that only 5% of workers will be financially independent during retirement. Over 90% of this 5%. read more
